| Biography |
Frank A. Urefe is a consultant, sports agent advisor, inspirational writer and dynamic speaker. In 2003, he graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Philosophy from Simon Fraser University in Canada and in 1995, bagged an Associate degree in Sports Science from Seminole State College in Oklahoma, USA.
He is the first of seven children and has lived most of his life in Canada and the United States. Coming all the way from Africa at the age of nineteen, he grew up to understand what it takes to be successful. During his childhood, he saw talented athletes who couldn’t afford three square meals a day and played sports in their bare feet. Yet they displayed tremendous passion and enthusiasm to succeed and win.
At 6 feet 8 inches and 240 pounds, Frank didn’t participate in organized sports until he finished high school. He played soccer growing up and later focused on basketball. His love for the game and hard work enabled him to secure full athletic scholarships to play in the United States and at Canadian colleges. At home, he was never encouraged to shoot for the stars; there were simply insufficient facilities in place to rapidly develop his skills and talents. He learned the fundamentals of basketball in an environment where, for him, being the best was the only option.
Before his graduation from Seminole State College, he received an outstanding membership award for his contribution to the team. For over 16 years, and despite the odds against him, he was fully committed to the game and determined to make a name for himself at all levels.
In 1995, after returning from the United States as a fresh graduate, he worked for the Canadian Government until he received an invitation for a professional basketball tryout in Czech Republic. If selected, he was to sign a fantastic playing contract that would bind him with the team for years. He was faced with a decision of either losing his job or pursuing his sports dreams. He decided on the latter. In 1996, he left for Europe to honor an invitation for a tryout without any guarantees or knowledge of what to expect. The challenges and setbacks that he faced throughout his sports career inspired him to start writing for the first time in his life. The publishing of his first book would naturally prepare him to become a sports consultant and an author in the field of sports psychology.
A man with an entrepreneur’s mind who loves to learn, Frank embarked on various business ventures after retiring from competitive sports. The intention behind these ventures was to establish financial stability for his family. In 2003, he had forgone the idea of attending law school to enrolling in an MBA program at the University of Dundee in Scotland, where he took courses in marketing, accounting, and organizational behavior. He founded the Sports Dreams Network to establish a forum where valuable information about reaching sports goals can be shared among members, such as, securing athletic scholarships, signing professional contracts, owning a sports brand, finding sports jobs and discovering your true potential using a computerized assessment program.
Frank has traveled extensively to many parts of the world. Included among the countries he has lived and visited are Canada, USA, Nigeria, Mexico, Czech Republic, Germany, UK, Netherlands, Belgium, Portugal, Taiwan, Estonia, Belize, Guatemala, Benin Republic and Lithuania. To him, traveling was more of a way to enjoy sports, do business, experience different cultures, and meet new people. He enjoyed eating Italian, Mexican, Taiwanese, and Portuguese food during some of his travels.
On December 27th, 2007, Frank lost his father to bone marrow cancer. This incident made him realize the most important things in life. He wept for several days before it suddenly dawned on him that after you pass away, you will be remembered for your good works and what you have done to help and uplift others. He believes that you may never be acknowledged or known for the type of car you drive, the house you live in, or other material things you have. This realization made him dedicate himself to writing and publishing books. He became keenly interested in charity work, promising to donate proceeds from the sale of his books to cancer research and helping talented athletes lacking the resources to develop their sports skills and talents. A devoted Christian, Frank taught Bible studies in his local church for a while and loves to pray about everything.
With a certification in Athlete Management, in 2009, Frank became a sports agent advisor to provide full representation services to professional athletes, while paving the way for young talented players to secure athletic scholarships. The praise that he received from readers around the world encouraged him to renew his life purpose, which is to focus on empowering others to reach a higher level of accomplishment in sports.
Frank’s interests in immigration law made him to pursue an immigration consulting diploma, to assist sports professionals in settling down in a new country, which he received on December 29th, 2009. He believes that sports skills and talents are more appreciated and respected in some countries than others. While he works independently with a sports consulting and immigration firm, he spends most of his time writing, networking and scouting for talented athletes globally.
He has featured in movies and television shows such as The Sixth Man and The Sentinel alongside sports celebrities like Clyde Drexler, retired Houston Rockets NBA star, Muggsy Bogues, Damon Lamon Stoudamire, both retired NBA point guards.
Frank’s hobbies include sports, traveling, writing, reading, watching movies, and having a good workout at his local fitness center. He sometimes spends his entire day in libraries and bookstores, doing research and reading motivational and business books.
He currently lives in Vancouver, British Columbia, with his family and wants to raise his two sons to set goals and never give up on their dreams. In other words, to help others succeed and avoid certain pitfalls on their journey to accomplish their goals; he shares these principles in his book “The Power to Succeed in Sports, Fitness and Life” |
